Spurious (meaning a made up note on a real bank in this case) and circulated contemporaneously with genuine notes.
Bank of Charleston lasted from 1834 to 1872. There was opposition to the creation of this bank by the older banks due to its large capitalization of $3 million. SC demanded money (gold) from its state banks and got $100,000 from this bank upon which the Bank of Charleston suspended (specie/gold) payments till after the war in 1869. In 1872 it closed and was reborn as the Bank of Charleston National Banking Association under the 1863 National Banking Act.
